NARRATIVE

What is narrative? 


The narrative text type tells a story. Its purpose is to present a view of the world that entertains or informs the reader or listener. Narrative text types: Fantasy novels, Bedtime stories (spoken), Historical fiction and Stories. 
Constructing a narrative 
The steps for constructing a narrative text are:
  1. An orientation (can be a paragraph, a picture or opening chapter) in which the narrator tells the audience about who is in the story, when the story is taking place and where the action is happening.
  2. A complication that sets off a chain of events that influence what will happen in the story.
  3. A sequence of events where the character react to the complication.
  4. A resolution in which the characters finally sort out the complication.
  5. A coda that provides a comment or moral based on what has been learned from the story ( an optional step)  
Language features of a narrative 
The language features usually found in narrative are:
  1. Specific characters
  2. Time words that connect events to tell when they occur
  3. Verbs to show the actions that occur in the story
  4. Descriptive words to portray the characters and settings.

Narrative for eight grade
  1. Nyi Roro Kidul (246) Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Kadita. Because of her beauty she was called Dewi Srengenge. It means The goddess of sun.   3. The Legend of Banyuwangi (185) Once upon a time, there was a local ruler named King Sulahkromo. The king hada Prime Minister named Raden Sidopekso. The Prime Minister had a wife named SriTanjung. She was so beautiful that the king wanted her to be his wife. continue reading
  4. The Lion and the Shepherd (152) Once upon a time, there was a Lion in a forest. Suddenly, the Lion stepped on a thorn. Then, the Lion met a shepherd. The Lion came to him and said, "I am begging you and needed your help." The shepherd examined him bravely. Finally, he discovered the thorn. He pulled it out with his hand. The lion thanked the shepherd. Then, the Lion returned into the forest. continue reading

  1. Cinderella (96) Once upon a time there was a girl called Cinderella. She lived with her stepsisters and stepmother. They treated her badly. She had to do all the house work. continue reading

The people of Bali used to say that Kbo Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a creator.   1. Three Foolish Sons (265) There was a rich man who had three sons. They lived in a large house in the town of Keelung in northern Taiwan. One day, he said to his sons, "You are no longer children. You must do something to earn your own living. When I die, I am not going to leave you very much money.   3. The Jealous Crow (416)  Far, far away there was a grove of shady mango trees. On one of the green trees there lived a cuckoo and a crow. They were quite alike in appearance. Both the birds were black. Only the crow was a little bigger. The cuckoo would lay all her eggs in the crow's nest. For quite some time they lived as good friends.
